Shaker Heights Country Club
Wednesday April 27th, Shaker Country Club
At this event we celebrate all things education. We will recognize student winners of awards offered by the section during the year, as well as our 2022 Heller-Dabrowski Outstanding HS Teacher award winner, Sarah Rivera of Mayfield HS.
After award recognitions and dinner we will have a Wikipedia tutorial session, see below for more information
ACS Exec Comm meeting: 5 – 6pm
Dinner and awards presentations: 6 – 7pm
Wikipedia tutorial session: 7 – 8pm
There has been growing recognition within the community of Wikipedians that, while the quality and traffic on their high-level chemistry-related articles is quite good, the coverage of other chemistry topics/subtopics is a bit spotty (articles can be out of date or incomplete, incorrect, etc.). Given our role and access to experts and the consensus science, Wikipedia is partnering with the American Chemical Society to host a Wikipedia tutorial session specifically to improve these articles. This is a major opportunity to help both improve Wikipedia’s content as well as increase access to our resources (including by providing direct citations into the articles).
This session will be hosted by Wikimedian Kevin Payravi and will include the following:
– demo editing an article live (ie, how to log in, edit, save, look at history)
– anatomy of an article: tabs, categories, hatnotes, etc.
– look at a “bad” article as a group and figure out what’s missing
– create your own user accounts and create a user page
– identify a formatting/wording clarification change in an article and make it
Feel free to bring your laptop and an example of an article that is in dire need of editing!
