2026 Edward W. Morley Address:
Reflections on my research, teaching, and outreach in sustainable chemistry.
In this talk, I will reflect on my decade-long journey to shifting my research, teaching, and outreach into the broad field of “sustainability.” I’ll highlight specific research directions, teaching innovations, and outreach activities, as well as reflect on the changes I am seeing in myself and my students in response to these efforts. Some research that I will highlight include chemical recycling of a waste plastic, developing adsorbants for PFAS, and measuring microplastics in the environment. I will also talk about the creation and evolution of two sustainability-focused courses – one aimed at high school students and one aimed at college students. Finally, I’ll share my experiences developing two museum exhibits focused on microplastics and writing journalistic pieces for The Conversation.
